Bookshop Blitz

Bookshop Blitz

Saturday 10th and 11th November

Drop in throughout the weekend for themed centenary activities.

To commemorate the First World War centenary, this November we invite you to step back in time in the Seven Stories Bookshop with Victoria Tunnel Tours, vintage music, book readings, games and much more.

On Saturday we commemorate World War II with special guest Dan Smith, author of ‘My friend the Enemy’ set in Northumberland in the 1940s.  Dan will be joining us - together with Ouseburn Trust, on a guided tour of the Victoria Tunnels hear the history of the tunnels during both wars and discover items such as bullets and shells once found there.

On Sunday we will observe the two-minute silence before joining Tom Palmer author of Armistice Runner – a story set during the hours just before and after the end of the first world war, exactly a century ago. Also joining us on Sunday is our friend Mr Ed from Stepney Bank Stables, come and meet this wonderful horse at 1pm to learn about the life of a horse in WW1 and how they were essential to the war effort.

Join both authors after the tours to listen to readings from their respective books and pick up your very own signed copy! Explore the Seven Stories collection whilst you’re here too by looking through facsimiles of our Robert Westall and Michael Morpurgo archives.

Both days will be packed with themed drop-in craft activities including make your own evacuee label, colour-in posters from the war and make your own poppies to add to our poppy wall.  There will also be plenty of vintage games to play with and we encourage period costume dress – bring your own or borrow from the bookshop for a Giant Centenary Selfie.

Don’t forget to pop by the Naffi Café on level 2 to enjoy corned beef pie, Victoria sponge cake and cream tea!
