Students meet Carnegie Winner Levi Pinfold
Black Dog is a book about being scared. It is also a book about not being scared. It all depends on how you see things.
Local 6th form students and illustration students from Sunderland University will join award-winning illustrator Levi Pinfold as he talks about his inspiration, creative process and stunning illustrations this Thursday. They are encouraged to ask questions and discover more about one of the most exciting illustrators working at the moment.
Maurice Sendak, Alan Lee and Dave McKean inspired Levi to study Illustration at the University College Falmouth, where he developed narrative illustrations in his own style; a stylised realism. Alongside painting, Levi writes stories in his spare time. Since graduating from university in 2006, Levi has worked as a self-employed illustrator. The Django (Templar Publishing) his debut picture book, is inspired by Levi's love of music. Levi won The Booktrust Early Years Award in the Best Emerging Illustrator Category for 2010 and in 2013 his second book, Black Dog was awarded the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal.
On winning the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal for outstanding illustration Levi said; “To win the Kate Greenaway medal is fantastic...I'm honoured that my work has been recognised by CILIP on behalf of librarians, for whom I have nothing but respect. I am always amazed at the passion for reading, looking and understanding that libraries inspire in everyone. The availability of a whole universe of knowledge and inspiration in one place is something highly underrated, as is the importance of encouraging minds, young and old, on the pathway to discovery. I think we all have a lot to learn from libraries.”
Most recently Levi has contributed to Pictura – a project showcasing art by some of the world’s most well respected illustrators and covering a wide range of subjects. Each time you unfold a Pictura you unfold a piece of art, just waiting for you to make it your own. Colour in a little, colour in a lot. There are no rules, it is yours for the making.
