Mix It Up! with Hervé Tullet at Seven Stories

Seven Stories are thrilled to welcome Hervé Tullet as their Artist in Residence this Autumn to celebrate the launch of his new book Mix It Up! (Chronicle Books,£9.99Hardback). In an explosion of colour, paint and creativity, Seven Stories has invited Hervé to launch a series of Artist in Residencies in their Creation Station. Hervé’s residency will inspire families, children and schools to explore their imaginations by playing with art.

Hervé Tullet studied Fine Art in France and his first book for children was published in 1994; twenty years later, the inspirational French artist has earned the title “Prince of pre-school books.” His extensive list of picturebooks continues to teach young minds to think imaginatively, independently and creatively. In a world dominated by screens and interactivity, Hervé cleverly uses beautiful illustration, cut away pages and humorous text to feed into children’s intuitive desire to play with books.

Seven Stories is delighted to welcome Hervé to the North East. During the four day residency, Hervé Tullet will work with visitors, school groups and students to create his installation on the walls of the Creation Station. The end of the residency will culminate on Saturday 27 September in a vibrant celebration where visitors will be invited to join Hervé for a family workshop to explore colour, paint and their imagination.

Hervé is looking forward to welcoming visitors to Seven Stories, “Let’s have fun together with shapes and colours, sounds and smiles. With a scribble here and a reading there - it will be really easy for everyone to join in and create art together!”

Seven Stories have also offered enthusiastic 18-25 year olds the opportunity to support Hervé during his residency, in a unique chance for visitors to work alongside a talented professional.

Visitors will be able to add their own photo and bring it to life with wacky scenes and colourful backgrounds that puts themselves in the picture inspired by Hervé Tullet’s picture book Help! We Need a Title (Walker Books). A Mini Giant Game of Sculpture (inspired by The Giant Game of Sculpture, Phaidon) will emerge as visitors are encouraged to use cardboard, tubes and other recycled materials to build a mini version of Hervé’s popular sculptures.

Babies and toddlers can experiment using paints and colour in Baby Blop (Thursday 2, 9, 16 & 23 October & Thursday 6, 13, 20 & 27 November at 3pm); a relaxed and friendly baby painting session where parents and carers are invited to help their child create their own pictures.

In celebration of European Languages Day, Hervé will accompany Seven Stories into Easterside Primary School, Middlesbrough to deliver a special Reading For Pleasure workshop. These workshops offer an imaginative and highly participatory approach to sharing French picturebooks with English-speaking children which stimulates their curiosity and visual awareness as well as promoting real-life foreign language learning.

Seven Stories’ Artist in Residency programme continues in January when Seven Stories will welcome rising star and award-winning author and illustrator Yasmeen Ismail.
