Elves Wanted! Seven Stories needs your help!

Christmas is coming! Seven Stories launches festivities this weekend with a stellar programme complete with elves, guest artist, everyone’s favourite mouse and a certain festive fella in red.

Season’s Greetings from all at Seven Stories –The National Centre for Children’s Books. It’s now December so let the Christmas Countdown begin.

This weekend sees the festive season launched in a whirlwind of sparkle and fun as families are invited to take part in this hysterical and interactive debut show Elves Wanted! A Magical Theatre Performance  (Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, 1pm and 2.30pm).  This bookable event will continue throughout December under the twinkling eaves of the Seven Stories Attic so snap up your tickets quickly.

Father Christmas is short on elves and Christmas preparations are falling behind – can you help?  Beneath the Arctic Polar Ice Cap, deep underground, is a bustling community with one mission and one mission only: to make Christmas happen.

With no elves turning up for elf training it is up to you to save Christmas.  Learn how to speak Reindeer, design a brand new toy, test your Christmas knowledge and graduate from Elf Academy! Father Christmas will join Elf Academy’s finest as families begin their induction to become part of his elf team.

Under 4s are treated to our hugely popular Maisy’s Christmas Tree StoryParty extravaganza.  This sold out event for little bookworms has been newly updated for 2015 and brings to life a picture book favourite using songs, games and sensory props. (Click here to find out more about our Early Years activities).

If that wasn’t enough – we are delighted to welcome local artist Paul Merrick to Seven Stories (Saturday 5 and Sunday 6 December, drop in). Discover enchanted lands peppered with tall pines, festive spruce trees and rolling, snow-topped mountains as local artist Paul Merrick sets the festive scene in our Studio and launches this magical installation. Join Paul to create a scenic sculpture inspired by the magical landscapes in much loved stories such as The Chronicles of Narnia.  Families will be able to contribute to this imaginative scene throughout December. Paul Merrick is a local artist who is inspired by children’s books and transforms everyday objects into his impressive installations.

The festive season continues on Monday 14 December with the enchanting On Angel Wings - The Concert performed by Michael Morpurgo. This stunning Christmas concert is written and performed by Michael Morpurgo, author of multi award-winning War Horse and former Children’s Laureate with guest appearance from actress Juliet Stevenson.

On Angel Wings is Michael Morpurgo’s magical retelling of the Christmas story. This unique Christmas concert combines Michael’s fabulous storytelling with a beautiful selection of carols sung by a cappella group Voices at the Door all against the enchanting backdrop of St Nicholas’ Cathedral, Newcastle.

Get out of the cold and settle down to watch a good film – Seven Stories has plenty for you to choose from this festive season including Harry Potter and The Philosopher’s Stone (Tuesday 29 December, 2pm) and Michael Foreman’s War Game (Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 December, 3pm).

We’re casting a spell over Christmas this year (Monday 28 – Thursday 31 December, drop in all day). Are you a brave Gryffindor, sneaky Slytherin, intelligent Ravenclaw or perhaps a loyal Hufflepuff? Choose your house colours and join us for wand-making and magical storytimes full of chants and potions in the heart of Diagon Alley.

Fans of Witchcraft and Wizardry are invited to come dressed as their favourite characters as Seven Stories celebrates its popular exhibition Illustrating Harry Potter with a touch of magic.
