Elmer and Friends: The Colourful World of David McKee celebrates 30 years of Elmer the Patchwork Elephant and is the first major retrospective of David McKee’s striking artwork.

Alongside artwork and manuscripts from the world famous Elmer series, some of which will be on display for the first time, the exhibition will also showcase artwork from David McKee’s other popular stories, including Not Now, Bernard.

Your group will take part in an interactive and imaginative led-tour of the exhibition where children will explore in the different world’s created by McKee, from the much loved-Elmer, to lesser known titles such as Tusk, Tusk and the nostalgic Mr Benn.

Through sensory and immersive exploration, the gallery visit will bring to life the colourful world of David McKee and showcase the author’s creative process.

Workshops

Step into the Rainbow (Elmer and the Rainbow)

Suitable for Nursery

The workshop the children will take part in is based on the book ‘Elmer and the Rainbow’ by David McKee.

Elmer and the other elephants are waiting for the storm to end so they can see the beautiful, colourful rainbow. But something dreadful has happened: the rainbow has lost its colours!

This immersive session will include an interactive story time, sensory exploration, building, sorting and drawing activities as well as a chance to move around and explore the ‘Rainbow’ freely.

Children will explore themes of giving, sharing and helping in an immersive drama based environment.

Strut your stuff! (Elmer’s Special Day)

Suitable for Reception

The workshop the children will take part in is based on the book ‘Elmer’s Special Day’’ by David McKee.

It's almost Elmer's Day again and the elephants have begun their preparations. But in all the excitement they are making an awful lot of noise and upsetting the other animals.

The children will be encouraged to think about the things they like and enjoy in the world around them, and also what they like about themselves on the inside. This will be explored through craft and drama activities.

Children will explore the themes of compassion, sharing and inclusivity.

Living Storyboards (Charlotte's Piggy Bank)

Suitable for KS1

The workshop the children will take part in is based on the book ‘Charlotte’s Piggy Bank’ by David McKee.

When Charlotte's Aunt Jane gives her a piggy bank, Charlotte thinks it is a silly present. Until she finds out that the piggy bank is magical and if she saves enough she will get a wish.

Looking closely at the illustrations and through drama activities, children will discover the stories and characters hidden within the pages of the book.

This session will provoke questions, challenge prejudice and encourage compassion.
