Magic from the Riverbed with David Almond: Laying foundations for extraordinary writing in the classroom

Day 1, Monday 25th Feb 2019, 9:00am-3:30pm

Day 2, Monday 18th March 2019, 9:00am-3:30pm

Join our Creative Learning and Engagement team for a unique two-day training course designed to help you equip your class with writing confidence, and to re-connect with the real creative processes that are the building blocks for writing enjoyment and motivation, in school and beyond.

Inspired by our Where Your Wings Were: Journeys with David Almond exhibition, this programme offers a special opportunity to hear directly from the author himself about his writing experiences and to handle the original preliminary notes for some of his books. You will gain an insight into how the non-linear process of professional writers can de-mystify the mechanics of necessary writing for children. Join us to be inspired by the exhibition, reflect on the value of failure and try out a range of enriching activities that can be replicated in the classroom to increase confidence to use rich language in writing.

You will take away:

  • Ideas for a half term of writing work inspired by the professional author’s process.
  • Simple, effective activities and approaches that can be applied year-round, to make creative writing accessible to learners of all abilities and motivation levels.
  • Key principles that underpin unlocking motivation for ALL children back in the classroom.
  • Increased skills & confidence to nurture young writers who aren’t afraid to fail.

£390 per person, includes:

  • Two days of training
  • Hands on activity with original materials
  • Author talk and book signing with David Almond
  • Books and resources
  • Lunch and refreshments on both days
