Emily Hughes was born in Hawaii, but lives and works in the UK. She is inspired by Chinese cinema and illustrators such as Blair Lent and Gyo Fujikawa. Her book Nana Shaped Like a Banana came second in the 2012 Macmillan Prize for Children’s Picture Books.  Her artwork has been widely exhibited and her picture books have received international recognition. Her debut book, Wild was published by Flying Eye in 2013, followed up with The Little Gardener in 2015. She went on to illustrate A Brave Bear, written by Sean Taylor and published by Walker Books in 2016 and is illustrating Laurel Snyder’s Charlie and Mouse.

When not doodling or walking around to come up with a story, she busies herself by reading (adult books and children's books alike, though she prefers the latter), making shopping lists (and regularly forgetting them) and watching dreary films.
