David Mackintosh was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and grew up in Australia. Originally interested in engineering, he tried art school and majored in illustration, the change largely influenced by sharing a house with art students. With a preoccupation with text and image and typography, he left university to work in editorial illustration and cover design for book publishers, establishing a studio in Australia.  He has gone on to work as a graphic designer and art director in publishing, advertising and television, working with some of the most celebrated names in children’s publishing.

His picture books have been shortlisted and long listed for prizes such as the CBCA Picture Book of the Year, the Roald Dahl Funny Prize, the Kate Greenaway Prize and the Western Writers of America Spur Award. Marshall Armstrong Is New To Our School won the Hampshire Book Award 2011.

David lives in London where he likes drawing, papier maché and being read to.
