This October half-term we invite you to face your fears, be brave and dream boldly as we ask the big questions.

What are your greatest fears?

Who could you be without your fears?

How can books help you, your friends and your family navigate the world we live in and inspire a courageous and curious life?

Join us throughout the holidays as we present an exciting programme of activities aimed at the whole family;

  • Become friends with your greatest fear as Polish children’s book author and illustrator Piotr Karski helps you to take a leap into the unknown in creative workshop Fear – my Wonderful Pet
  • Learn how the ancient Egyptians prepared for death and step back in time to find out more about mummification, the Book of the Dead and secret tombs in Afterlife with the Histronauts
  • Join our Death Café to have open conversations about death in a supportive environment (with plenty of tea and cake). We will be sharing archive material relating to The Sad Book by Michael Rosen which is held in the Seven Stories Collection.
  • Paint what you think might be lurking in the shadows and watch as it glows in the dark in our Fluorescent Painting workshops!
  • Face your fear of the dark and create a dazzling painting using light from glow sticks in our exciting Light Painting workshops with the Institute of Physics
  • Adventure to A Strange New Space – a performance that melds physical theatre with stunning puppetry and original music. Join us as we travel on an imagined voyage into space, paralleled with Amira’s real-life journey as a refugee across continents.
  • Make a din and dance away the dark in special I’m not Scared Dance Parties or take a Walk on the Dark side in one of our after-hours haunted tours of the building.
  • Dive in, be brave and explore the deepest, darkest part of the sea - Mariana Trench as we host an imaginative play workshop to find the weird and wonderful creatures lurking in this unknown part of the world…we'll also be holding a special Conversation Cafe exploring sadness - what it means to you and how we can cheer ourselves up when we feel sad.
  • Story Times get a fearful makeover throughout half-term and it will be lights-out at lunchtime for multi-sensory Storytime in the Dark every day!
