In 2020 we were pleased to support a fundraising campaign championed by ex-teacher Laura Heaps to help North East schools make their book collections more diverse.

Following George Floyds’ death and the Black Lives Matter movement, Laura felt compelled to do something to ensure that her support of the movement had a long lasting positive impact. Understanding that awareness and acceptance of diversity starts from an early age, Laura was inspired to set up a crowdfunding campaign to supply diverse book bundles to primary schools.

It is Laura's hope that these books will not only give more visibility of diverse characters but also support in providing a stepping stone to discussions around race and equality from a young age.

We were pleased to have been asked to curate and supply the book bundles which will include books by Black authors and illustrators and about Black people in history.

The book bundles were distributed to primary schools across the North East including Chester le Street Primary School, Bishop's Primary School, Corpus Christi Primary School and Welbeck Academy.  Participating schools in the fundraiser said:

"The children have decided that they will complete a whole half term after Christmas around these books looking specifically at the Benjamin Zephaniah books and the Freedom book by Catherine Johnson".  Chester le Street Primary

"In the spring term of 2021, all children across all five of our primary campuses will have access to the new books alongside other culturally diverse books which have been supplied by Northumberland County Council’s Schools Library Service. Hopefully this will provide our pupils with a powerful stimulus to talk and learn about diversity, equality and racism". Bishop's Primary School

Here are some photographs of pupils enjoying the books in their classrooms.

And from the team at Seven Stories, a huge thank you to Laura for creating such a positive and inspirational crowdfunding campaign which will benefit many children in the North East for years to come!
