Into the Jungle: February Half Term at Seven Stories
6 Feb 2012
Crawl, prowl, slither or fly down to Seven Stories this February Half term for a whole week of WILD activities! Go Through the Magic Mirror and into the world of Anthony Browne for the last time and join in with awesome ape and mad monkey activities based on the work of this best-selling author and illustrator. With jungle themed face painting and all of your favourite animal stories, this week is perfect entertainment for your wild thing. Grrrrrrr!
Swing by the Creation Station and transform yourself into a monkey with monkey mask making all day, plus create some new jungle friends to take back to your tree-house. Take your new friends up to the attic to listen to some of your favourite animal stories, including Gorilla by Anthony Browne.
Step through the magic mirror with the man himself, Anthony Browne, on Saturday 18 February and take the chance to meet the former Children’s Laureate and star of Seven Stories current exhibition. This is a great event for all of your cheeky monkeys to wave goodbye to Gorrila, Willy the Champ, Little Beauty and all of their friends before Through the Magic Mirror, the World of Anthony Browne closes its doors for the last time. Plenty of audience participation is needed, this event is packed with storytelling, drawing and a lot of aping around!
Adults looking for an insight into the world of a best-selling illustrator are invited to join Anthony Browne for an illustration master class on Friday 17 February. With almost 40 books for children, Anthony has been awarded the Kate Greenaway Medal for Zoo and is the first British illustrator to win the Hand Christian Anderson Award for services to children’s literature. This is an exclusive master-class focusing on creative process, illustration techniques and, of course, gorillas!
Anthony said, "I'm really looking forward to meeting the illustrators, young and old, looking at their work, talking about it and telling them about how I started. I hope to inspire them and be inspired by them. I'm also looking forward to seeing the fantastic Seven Stories, and having a last look at Through the Magic Mirror exhibition before it moves on."
Not only one award-winning illustrator but two grace the Artists Attic this February Half Term. Come and meet author and illustrator Nick Sharratt and laugh your socks off with a whole collection of characters in very crazy clothes on Tuesday 14 February. Look out for pandas in pants, hippos in hats and cows in kung-fu outfits. They’ll be drawing, rhyming and funny games to play in this one hour session followed by a public book signing.
Nick will be sharing lots of picture books and presenting his brand new book, Socks, so put on your jolliest pair and please bring along an old sock too! Look out for sockrels, socodiles and Goldisocks and prepare to see your sock draw in a whole new light. Plus a surprise appearance from a mystery guest!
Nick said, “I'm very excited to be presenting Socks at Seven Stories. This book was a long time in the making. It took ages to get the words side just right (years in fact) in contrast to the pictures which, when I came to draw them, were very spontaneous for me and huge fun to do. We'll be doing some drawing at the session designing our own socks, as well as making sock puppets and singing the Sockywockydoodah song!”
He continued, “We'll also be looking at a few old favourite books and I'll be revealing how socks have managed to find their way into quite a lot of the books I've illustrated, some quite surprising. It's lovely to be back at Seven Stories, as it's got such a friendly, welcoming atmosphere and is the most brilliant venue for children to come to, with so much for them to see and do. I'll be making time to have a really good look round myself.”
Events Officer Lorna Duncanson said, “I am delighted to welcome Anthony and Nick back to Seven Stories, I am such a huge fan of both of their work and to have them both here over February Half Term is incredible. Event attendees are in for a treat!”
