Bébés Chouettes
Pretty much every child who started school in the past 20 years must have read this book, as it's a firm favourite with primary teachers. Now you can read it in French! There are a few differences (the quintessentially English Percy and Bill have become Rémy and Lou), but it's still the same tale of anxiety, bravery and reassurance.
And just in case your French is a little rusty, you can also buy the English version to help...

Gribouillis, Gribouillons
Gribouillis is French for scribble, so it may be best to think of this board book as a French version of Anthony Browne's Shape Game - each page shows a different brightly coloured scribble, and when you turn over, you can see that the scribble can be part of a larger picture - a mouse's tale, perhaps, or a snail's shell. And as if that weren't enough, it's all told in rhyming French couplets, full of interesting vocabulary. Ingenious, witty and educational - what more could you want?

John Chatterton, Détective
In this sly hommage to the film noir genre, John Chatterton, a zoot-suited black cat working as a PI, is hired to track down a rich woman's daughter, who has disappeared on the way to to her granmother's apartment. But when he discovers that the girl was dressed all in red, and that an evil wolf may be behind the disappearance, he becomes suspicious...
The knowing references to well-known detective tropes and the story of Little Red Riding Hood, combined with the fact that the whole story is told in easy-to-understand direct speech, make this an ideal picture book for older readers learning French for the first time.

La chasse a l'ours
"Nous allons a la chasse a l'ours." So begins this French version of one of the most-loved and well-known picture books of the last two decades. Helen Oxenbury's timeless illustrations remain the same, but it's interesting to see some of the differences in the French translation. "What a beautiful day!" for example, becomes "La vie est belle!" and Michael Rosen's onomatopoaeic "Squelch, squerch!" translates as "Plaf plouf!"
Just in case you need a bit of help, you can also buy the English version to help you out...
